Gardening ideas for the green thumb in all of us

As the weather is warming up, I find myself looking for excuses to get outside more and more. It started with my teacup succulents and has branch out from there. I’ve also joined together with some of my favorite bloggers to bring you lots of other gardening ideas for spring!

In case you missed my teacup succulent blog post, I wanted give you a quick refresher. And, as a bonus today, I’m also going to show you how to add adorable tea tags to your teacup succulents to them to make them a truly custom gift or party favor.

First, you make a foil cast of your teacup:

How to pot succulents in any vessel without drainage holes by making a foil cast to serve as a DIY floater pot inside.

This is how you ensure your succulent has proper drainage without having to damage or alter your teacup.

Next, you fill your foil cast with cactus mix potting soil. Personally, I think Hoffman makes the best soil for cactus or succulents. Yes, you actually need cactus soil mix for this, regular potting soil will hold on to too much water and will slowly kill your succulent.

How to plant succulents

Create a little hole in your soil. Gently place your succulent into the hole. Then CAREFULLY fill back in around its delicate roots.

and, just like that, your teacup succulent is complete.

Pro Tip: I prefer to order my succulents on Amazon since they’re cheaper and I can skip a trip to the store. Altman Plants sells 12 for $29.95 and The Valley Garden Inc sells 5 for $14.99. There are so many companies selling live succulents right on Amazon, that I can always find them for around $2.00-3.00/each. This easily beats the store prices at around $4.00 each! And, by ordering a mix of them, you don’t have to worry about deciding between the different succulent types.

How to add a custom tea tag

Now, if you really want to go above and beyond, you can add a “tea tag” to your new potted plant. We first did this when we wanted to say thank you to our realtor who sold our home. It was the perfect final touch for this project. You can either design one yourself or you can get my free printable ones below. I’ve included tags for all sorts of occasions and events.

To add a tea tag to your teacup succulent, you’ll need a few simple supplies you probably have around the house already: masking tape, a pair of scissors, white thread, a glue stick, and a printer.

Download and print the pdf. Once you print them out, simply fold along the dotted lines and cut them out.

I like to leave a little white space around the border of mine but you can cut right along the black outline if you prefer. Then, I cut about 7-8″ of white thread, fold it in half, and glue it between the two sides of the tag.

Since your new potted succulent is sitting in its very own foil floater pot, you can simply lift the whole thing out. That way you can tape the tea tag string directly to the inside of the teacup. Now, just set your plant back in and you’re done! Easy peasy.

You now have the perfect gift or favor!
